Callahan Cooks Killer Chili

Twenty cooks competed in the Meadowlands Racetrack’s second annual Homestyle Chili Cookoff and all were vying for the grand prize of $1,000 and a spot in the International Chili Society’s World Championship in Reno, Nevada.

Joseph Callahan from Summit, New Jersey took home the $1,000 prize with for his Homestyle Chili Verde.

“We had such a great time competing last year at the racetrack that we couldn’t wait to come back for this year’s competition,” Callahan said.

Callahan was also pleased his daughter, Marjorie Callahan, took home third place and a $250 cash prize.

Dave Ronge from Prince William, CT took second place in Homestyle Chili for the second year in a row. Ronge also took the $500 top prize in the Homemade Salsa contest for the second straight year.

All those at the track were able to sample and vote for their favourite chili and salsa throughout the evening. Laura Stoessel from West Milford, NJ was voted the People’s Choice Chili Champion for the second year in a row.

“Our Chili Cookoff has become a must-do event at the track,” said Meadowlands Racetrack General Manager and COO Jason M. Settlemoir. “We had an increase in participants and People’s Choice voters this year and can’t wait for next year! ”
