After racing in two Preferred trot events last Fall, it appeared as though trotting icon San Pail was back and recovered from his extended layoff after injury. Having not been seen since, Trot Insider asked trainer and co-owner Rod Hughes for an update on the fan favourite.
With racing opportunities running dry, sending trotters like Daylon Magician stateside, Hughes told Trot Insider that San Pail was shut down for the Winter. Hughes is pleased to see the Preferred Trot filling again and plans to drop San Pail back in the box for that race at a yet-to-be determined date, possibly in March.
It was early October when San Pail returned to victory lane for the first time since March 2012. The then-nine-year-old trotting son of San Pellegrino, who was sidelined for over a year with a right-hind ankle injury, captured the $34,000 Preferred Trot in his second start off the shelf in 1:53.1.
Hughes and his wife Emily co-own the $3.1-million winning, three-time O'Brien Award winning San Pail, with Glenn Van Camp. Van Camp will look to add to his trophy collection at this year's O'Briens with three-year-old colt trot nominee Your So Vain.
