Aged Canadian pacing star Jimmy Freight took his first steps on the racetrack on Saturday (Jan. 28) at The Meadowlands following several months on the mend.
Jimmy Freight qualified at The Meadowlands during its session held prior to the pari-mutuel card. In that qualifier, Scott Zeron settled the eight-year-old Sportswriter stallion to race third after a :28.1 first quarter and uncorked a :54.2 back half to beat pacesetter American Classic by a neck in 1:52.
Brett Pelling currently trains Jimmy Freight, who had a small fracture found after a fourth-place finish in the $650,000 Canadian Pacing Derby to world champion Bulldog Hanover. Jimmy Freight underwent reparative surgery for the fracture and readies for a potential campaign as an eight-year-old off a 2022 record that included 12 wins from 21 starts and $421,145 earned. In his career, Jimmy Freight has won 33 races from 75 starts and amassed $1,878,550 for owners Let It Ride Stables Inc. and the Jimmy Freight Stable of Boca Raton, Florida.
