Parked from the start, Scene A Magician and driver Garrett Rooney survived an overland journey to take top honours in the $14,300 Preferred 2 & 3 Handicap Trot featured on Friday night (Jan. 28) at The Raceway at Western Fair District.
Scene A Magician, one of the two trailers in the field of nine going the added distance of 1-1/16 miles, was left parked out through the opening quarter as Wrap And A Hooey (Tyler Borth) secured the lead among the early leavers courtesy of his inside post advantage.
Scene A Magician stalked outside in fourth for the first lap through fractions of :30.1 and 1:01 before advancing up alongside the leader down the backstretch approaching three-quarters in 1:32.3. He eventually wore down Wrap And A Hooey late in the lane and held off Herbs Journey (Colin Kelly), who rallied from second-over, by half a length for the victory in 2:09.2. Wrap And A Hooey settled for third, finishing 1-1/2 lengths behind.
After a pair of runner-up finishes in his first three starts of the year, Scene A Magician returned $16 to win for the mild 7-1 upset. The eight-year-old gelded son of Daylon Magician notched his 21st victory lifetime and boosted his bankroll to $271,477 for owner/trainer Jennifer Pinkerton.
