Odds-on favourite Adkins Hanover kicked past his competition to take the $2,400 closing-day feature at Charlottetown Driving Park by three-and-three-quarter lengths on Saturday, Jan. 26.
The 10-year-old Western Ideal gelding backed to last in the six-horse field as Intended Royalty challenged Dustlanemissmolly for the lead to a :28.2 opening quarter. Winter Blast, sitting fifth, tipped off the rail moving to the second turn and supplied cover to Adkins Hanover heading to a :57.1 half.
Intended Royalty owned a three-and-a-quarter length lead pacing to three-quarters in 1:27.3 while Adkins Hanover advanced uncovered into the final turn. Adkins Hanover drew within a head of the lead at the head of the lane before sprinting clear of Intended Royalty in progress to a 1:57.1 mile. Red Magician, tracking the favourite's cover, finished third.
Owned by Perry Burke, Adkins Hanover won his fourth race from five starts this season and his 45th from 201 overall, earning $252,360. David Dowling, who won four races on the program, drove the Trevor Hicken trainee and paid $3.30 to win.
Rollwithitharry and rookie-driver Drew Neill took the final dash of the 2019 winter meet: an $1,800 conditioned pace. Teaming up with conditioner Jackie Matheson to win three dashes on the program, the post-three starter found the front early and extended his lead to win in 1:59 over Pictonian Storm and Jds Double Dose. The 11-year-old Rocknroll Hanover stallion is owned by Woodmere Farms of Marshfield, P.E.I.
Neill and Matheson's other victories came with Collective Wisdom in 2:00.2 and Howmacs Dragonator in 2:00.3.
