Somebeachsomewhere, MacDonald To Be Recognized At O'Brien Awards

In addition to honouring Canada’s National Harness Racing Champions, Media Excellence winners and Outstanding Grooms there will be some additional accolades included on the evening’s program at the O’Brien Awards Black Tie Gala on Saturday, February 3.

Standardbred Canada will pay tribute to the legendary Somebeachsomewhere, and 2017 World Driving Champion, James MacDonald, with special video presentations during the evening.

Somebeachsomewhere, an icon in the Standardbred industry, was humanely euthanized at Mid-Atlantic Veterinary Center in Ringoes, New Jersey at roughly 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, January 14.

The son of Mach Three won four O’Brien Awards during his racing career, taking divisional titles and Horse of the Year titles for his two-year-old and three-year-old campaigns as well as the 2008 Cam Fella Award.

James MacDonald, Canada’s representative and winner of the 2017 World Driving Championship will also be feted with a special video presentation. Last August, MacDonald took the WDC title after he topped the standings in a field of international drivers that competed in 22 races at five racetracks in four provinces.

The 2017 O'Brien Awards take place on Saturday, February 3, 2018, at the Hilton Mississauga / Meadowvale Hotel in Mississauga. Tickets are now on sale and can be purchased by contacting the Industry Marketing Department at 905-858-3060.
