Former Chechen rebel Ramzan Kadyrov, who is currently the president of Chechnnya, has purchased three-year-old thoroughbred Maritimer for a reported $1.7 million
.
An article by Jennifer Morrison in the Toronto Star explains that human rights groups have accused Kadyrov of murder, torture and other abuses over the years. Kadyrov raced horses at Woodbine Racetrack in 2011, but was ‘scrutinized’ by both the Kentucky and New York’s racing commissions.
Maritimer, who will now be trained by Seth Benzel, won the Coronation Futurity and the Display Stakes last year.
The colt could contest the Queen’s Plate and the Kentucky Derby this year.
