For the third straight year, a trotting mare has captured the world's richest race for trotters under saddle, the €750,000 Prix de Cornulier contested on Sunday at Hippodrome Paris-Vincennes.
With 22-year-old Alexandre Abrivard in the irons, Scarlet Turgot was hustled to the front of the 18 trotters. The 10-year-old mare was challenged at numerous points throughout the 2,700 metre event but held strong to withstand a late bid from Astor de Quenne (Adrien Lamy) by a neck for the lion's share of the purse.
The win was the 19th lifetime for Scarlet Turgot (Dahir de Prelong - Noella de Massy), trained by Yannick-Alain Briand. The win in the Prix de Cornulier marks the third straight time a female trotter has won this race after trotting star Roxanne Griff was victorious in 2014 and 2015. She has since retired.
