High Level Hypocrisy

The editorial board of the powerful Chicago Tribune held a two-hour interview with the city’s four mayoral candidates this week, fawning over their enlightened intelligence.

The wide-ranging session touched on slots at tracks, and here is the Trib’s reporting on that:

“The next mayor of Chicago wants to keep the city’s existing ban on video gaming, which chiefly exploits working class and poor households. The four candidates’ answers to that question were a staccato yes, yes, yes and yes. That news will shock Illinois legislators who are counting on legalized video gambling to pay for much of a $31 billion capital improvement plan that allows them to preen for the cameras at ribbon-cuttings. If Chicago keeps its ban intact, maybe the legislators will realize they shouldn’t have jammed this scourge into law in 2009.”

And then the kicker:

“All four candidates are open to the licensing of a Chicago casino.”

We’re not sure how you reconcile those two ideas, but Rahm Emanuel, Carol Mosely Braun, Gary Chico and Miguel del Valle, the four candidates, apparently don’t let the contradiction bother them.
