Codename Cigar Box went gate-to-wire in the featured $28,000 conditioned pace at Woodbine Mohawk Park on Saturday, Jan. 20, upsetting the field at 18-1.
Codename Cigar Box and Travis Cullen sprinted from the rail to grab the early lead. The Jodie Cullen student set panels in :26.4, :56 and 1:24. His challengers gave chase in the stretch, but Codename Cigar Box had generated enough momentum to carry his to a three-quarter-length victory in 1:52.3 over 12-1 Hp Momentum (Tyler Borth). Favoured Points North (Sylvain Filion) rounded out the top three.
Paul Sanders, A1stable and Ronald Cullen co-own the six-year-old Custard The Dragon-Art Amour gelding, who crested the half million mark with $504,523 earned. In 105 career starts, Codename Cigar Box has made 29 trips to the winner's circle with two of those trips made in three starts so far this season. As the upset winner in the upper class this week, he returned $38.60 to win.
