Sterling Cooper earned his second consecutive victory in the $10,500 Open Pace at Fraser Downs on Wednesday night (Jan. 20) with another front-striding effort over the off track for the Bill Davis stable.
Sterling Cooper quickly took the lead from post two ahead of insider Comes Home First (Jim Marino) and fronted the compact field of five through panels of :26.4, :56.1 and 1:23.1 over the "good" track surface. Comes Home First, the even-money favourite, closed late in the stretch, but could not reel in Sterling Cooper, who had built up an insurmountable lead down the backstretch and cruised home for the three-quarter length triumph in 1:52. Sterling Cooper paid $6.30 to win as the 2-1 second favourite. Son Of Anarchy (Paul Davies) finished third.
Trainer Bill Davis co-owns the eight-year-old Camluck gelding, who is now two-for-three in his 2016 campaign, with Jeff Elchuk of Surrey, B.C. Sterling Cooper boasts 33 career wins -- 10 of which he earned last year alone -- and $218,773 in purses.
