A short time off proved what the doctor ordered for Samandar, winner of an $11,000 male pace on an overcast and foggy Sunday, Jan. 13 at Dover Downs, when Corey Callahan drove five winners.
Red-hot driver Callahan notched win number five guiding Samandar to victory in his first 2013 start, a 1:52 decision in the Sunday feature. Owned by M&L Of Delaware and trained by Bruce Saunders, the five-year-old by American Ideal-Lady Sammie has now won $343,489 lifetime. Cracker Pullet (Eddie Davis Jr.) finished second with Ideal Vintage (Eric Carlson) third.
Earlier, Little Michael B racked up a 1:50 performance with Ron Pierce driving to win a $9,000 male pace. The Cams Card Shark-Maid West four-year-old gelding is owned by Baron Racing and VIP Internet stables and trained by Josh Green. Pierce was able to pull away in deep stretch after fighting off Highbeam Rusty N (Corey Callahan). Luscious Al (Vic Kirby) came on to take second for the third straight time. Highland Rusty N hung on for third.
In addition to Callahan’s five wins, Hall of Famer Pierce, trainer Les Givens and owner Nanticoke Racing made the winner’s circle three times. Trainers Mike Hall and Walter Callahan had two winners each.
Streaking Jeremes Sweetheart looks for her fourth consecutive win in the $23,000 Mares Open Pace, the Monday Dover Downs feature race. First race post time is 4:30 p.m.
