A plan to turn Manitoba's Assiniboia Downs into what's being described as an 'urban reserve' complete with racing, entertainment and other amenities will be debated by Winnipeg city council on Tuesday.
According to the Winnipeg Free Press, the racetrack and barn area would remain. Added to the location would be an entertainment centre (that's currently a large parking lot) complete with hotel and conference centre, more gaming facilities plus shopping and dining.
Plans also include a transit hub plus pedestrian and cycling paths to ensure the destination is accessible to those without a car.
"It’s very early days," said Darren Dunn, Assiniboia Downs' CEO. "We have many, many steps to go."
The Free Press went on to say that the plan doesn't indicate if a casino will be part of the project. The track is presently home to 140 VLTs.
