Travis Cullen is less than a month away from making the trek to PEI to possibly earn an O’Brien Award in the Future Star category, but the reality is - he’s already a star.
Cullen, who boasts a lifetime UTR of .394 and a career UDR of .357, constructed a four-win performance during Saturday afternoon’s 11-race card at Northlands Park – a feat he’s accomplished on numerous occasions during his five-year career.
The first trip to victory lane was earned by Da Terror, who cruised to a 14-length triumph in 1:56.1 in Race 4. Cullen came right back to take Race 5 with that pacer’s stablemate, Cabo Real, in 1:57.3. Red Star Cashflow gave his trainer/driver a natural hat trick thanks to his half-length score in Race 6. The gelding stopped the teletimer in 1:55.4. The four-bagger was completed when Spoons turned in a wire-to-wire win in Race 9. He held on for the narrow score in 1:57.1.
The Edmonton, Alberta horseman put up career-best totals as a driver (159 wins - $619,750 in earnings) and trainer (198 wins - $572,604 in earnings - .433 UTR) in the 2013 season, and he’s been on fire to start the 2014 season.
