Mystra Upsets In Mares Open At Dover

Mystra won her first $23,00 Mares Open Handicap of the meet scoring a 1:52.4 upset in Tuesday’s feature pace at Dover Downs

After a second-place finish last week, Mystra overlooked at 24-1 followed Go On BB (Matt Kakaley) around the final turn the outpaced six rivals down the lane to score her first win of 2012.

Brad Hanners was in the bike for Foulk Stables sending the Art Major-Pastrami Hanover seven-year-old’s lifetime earnings to $411,556. No Bad Luck (Montrell Teague) also steamed down the stretch to finish second. Another longshot 23-1 Lorrie Please (Daryl Bier) took third.

In the first of two $16,500 Mares Winners-Over paces, VC Atom N continued a recent success story when Vince Copeland hustled Niel Gargiulo, Bruce Baker, and trainer Wayne Givens-owned daughter of Washington VC-Kowhai, handled by Vince Copeland, from off-the-pace to notch a 1:53.1 triumph. The clocking is lifetime mark for the winner of her second straight and fourth in five starts. Odds On Riesling (Tony Morgan) came on to finish second with Wish All You Want (Matt Kakaley) the show horse. Star Keeper was scratched reducing the starting field to eight.

Victor Kirby racked up his second straight win on the program guiding fast finishing Melissas Fancy to a 1:52.4 victory in a second $16,500 distaff pace. Melissas Fancy LP owns the Eddie Dennis-conditioned six-year-old Blissful Hall-Everythings Easy mare, a winner of her third race in four outings. Joanna Allen (George Dennis) was a close second with Ash Larue (Daryl Bier) third.

Corey Callahan added to his meet leading total with three winning drives.
