First out of the gate for the 2021 Heart of Harness Racing Calendar is this winter image of Justin Turnbull hanging out with his Great Uncle Fraser’s horses, Carols June Bug and Junebugs Sister in Dominion, N.S. The photo was taken by Justin’s father, Jason Turnbull.
Jason lives down the road from his Uncle’s farm, and the horse paddock runs behind all of the properties on the street. A barn in Jason’s yard that blocked a big part of the view of the horse paddock was torn down in early 2020, which opened up more space for Jason and his family to see the horses every day.
On this particular day, two horses had stopped right behind Jason’s yard and he decided to grab the camera and snap some photos of his son Justin with the horses.
“Now that the barn is gone you can see the horses clearly and Justin is always going out to see them and feeding them carrots.”
Jason currently works in shipping and receiving for an electronics retailer, and has been a professional photographer for over 25 years. Like many others in the Maritimes, Jason grew up with family who were involved in the business, which kept his passion alive throughout the years. He now shares his excitement and love for harness racing with his son Justin.
The pair had planned to travel from Nova Scotia to Ontario this summer to add the North America Cup to the list of renowned races that Jason and his son Justin have attended together. However, due to travel restrictions this summer as a result of COVID, they were unable to attend the race.
That didn’t stop them from getting in on the action, as the duo was able to watch the live feed online through COSA TV.
“The whole time we have been following the COSA TV and we kept asking questions and keeping ourselves occupied with virtual feeds and videos. Justin even got a shoutout on the feed from Ken Middleton on North America Cup night because we couldn’t make it to Ontario like planned because of the COVID restrictions.”
Both Jason and Justin are hopeful that they will be able to make the trip to the Cup in summer 2021.
This is the second time that Jason has been featured in the Heart of Harness Racing Calendar. He was also featured last July.
