Southwind Jaden, Hoerdt Shine

Southwind Jaden ($9.20) lifted late to take the New Year's Day feature at Fraser Downs, while Kelly Hoerdt picked up right where he left off in 2019 and posted a training treble.

Trainer-driver Brandon Campbell put Southwind Jaden in play immediately from the outside post 6 in the featured $10,800 Open Pace, and the pair tucked in third midway on the first turn behind a blistering :26.2 first quarter from 3-4 favourite Boiling Oar (Billy Davis Jr.). Southwind Jaden enjoyed clear sailing off middle fractions of :55.4 and 1:23.2 before angling off the pegs on the final turn.

Off the home turn, Campbell fanned the now seven-year-old Bettors Delight gelding three-wide, and he lunged to just nab Iwontdothatagain (Hoerdt) — who led briefly at the sixteenth polee after pulling the pocket — in 1:52.2. Mach Steady (Dave Hudon) surged belatedly down the grandstand side to take third over the engulfed Boiling Oar.

Southwind Jaden, a 28-time winner, campaigns for Peter Chanak and Dana Shore.

Leading trainer Kelly Hoerdt padded his advantage over Jim Marino in the Fraser standings with three winners on the nine-race card: Lively Rocket ($4.30, 1:55.1) in an $8,000 claiming distaff pace, Outlawstandndelivr ($3.90, 1:53.4) in a $5,000 claiming pace, and Dreamers Delight ($5.10, 1:57.1) in a $7,700 optional claiming pace.
