Trot Insider has compiled a list of Canada’s 2018 leading drivers and trainers at racetracks across the country in recognition of their accomplishments.
Louis-Philippe Roy, a native of Mont-Joli, Que. who now makes his home in Guelph, Ont., made his way to the top of Canada's driver standings for the first time in 2018. Roy boasted 413 wins along with $6.7 million in purses on Canadian soil, leading the country in each statistic.
Gilles Barrieau is a perennial fixture among the top UDRS drivers in Canada, and his 0.417 percentage in 2018 was the nation's best. The 'Maritime Magic Man' made 519 seasonal starts, sporting a summary of 143-92-68.
In the running for his sixth straight O'Brien Award as Canada's Trainer of the Year, Richard Moreau of Puslinch, Ont. put up some incredible numbers in the 2018 season. He sent 315 winners postward and trained horses to more than $4.695 million in earnings, a new personal best. Again the leading trainer on the WEG circuit, Moreau also captured top training honours at Georgian Downs while topping the standing at Western Fair for purse earnings.
Trainer Yves Tessier of Laval, Que. captured his first training title at Rideau Carleton Raceway in 2018 while sporting the nation's best UTRS at 0.411. Tessier also reached career highs in starts (343) wins (94) and purses ($489,636) last season.
