Trot Insider has compiled a list of the 2013 leading drivers and trainers at racetracks across the country in recognition of their accomplishments.
Drivers Sylvain Filion and Trevor Henry and trainer Richard Moreau ranked number one on the national leaderboard for the second consecutive year.
Canada's defending Driver of the Year, Filion led all reinsmen in the nation for purse earnings with his mounts banking $6,111,736. The 44-year-old resident of Milton, Ont. was the leading driver on the Woodbine Entertainment Group circuit and earned the Lampman Cup for the second straight year topping the Ontario Sires Stakes standings. He celebrated his richest win of the season steering Boomboom Ballykeel to a 10-1 upset victory in the $683,000 Metro Pace.
Henry was the win leader with 529 victories on the year. The 42-year-old reinsman from Arthur, Ont., who represented Canada in the World Driving Championship, defended track titles at Clinton Raceway, Grand River Raceway and Western Fair Raceway.
Gilles Barrieau reclaimed the title as Canada's leading percentage driver with an average of .420. He last led the nation in 2011 and was a close runner-up in 2012. The 49-year-old Saint John, N.B. horseman won the annual E.F. Acorn Memorial Driver’s Championship at Charlottetown Driving Park and earned track titles at Exhibition Park Raceway and Fredericton Raceway in his home province and at Summerside Raceway in P.E.I. From 506 drives, he earned 138 wins, 96 seconds and 64 thirds.
On the training side, Moreau's stable won 279 races and earned $3,623,805 in purses. The 49-year-old resident of Puslinch, Ont., who is the conditioner of Boomboom Ballykeel, earned training titles across Ontario at Georgian Downs, Grand River Raceway, Mohawk Racetrack, Western Fair Raceway and Woodbine Racetrack.
At the age of just 21 years old, Travis Cullen was the nation’s leading percentage trainer with an average of .433. Based in Edmonton, Alta., Cullen put together a training record of 120-78-59 in 422 starts and was the win leader at both Alberta Downs and Northlands Park. Cullen's success earned him a nomination for the O'Brien Awards' first ever Future Star Award.
