The Candidates

REGION #1 - WESTERN REGION

Carole Dunbar (Active Director/Saskatchewan)

I am in my second two year term as President of the Saskatchewan Standardbred Breeders and Owners Association and I am a past director of the SSHA. My husband Gary and I own and operate a farm just outside of Regina, Saskatchewan. I am involved in both the racing and breeding of Standardbred horses.

This past summer I was involved in the WannaBet program at our tracks and I feel it is a valuable program to introduce and educate people who are new to harness racing. I attended every live race date during our 5 months of racing in Saskatchewan and enjoy traveling to other parts of Canada to watch racing, attend the sales and visit the farms.

I look forward to meeting our members, promoting our industry and facing the challenges ahead as we move forward toward a bright future.

REGION #2 - ONTARIO REGION

Byron Beeler (Active Director/Ontario)

With a background in business (retired President of Novartis Animal Health Canada Inc.) and a life long involvement in agriculture and the equine industry in Ontario, I believe that my experience will bring value to Standardbred Canada.

I was the first Chair of Equine Guelph, a Past President of the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair, owned Standardbred race horses since the 1970's, and I am aware of many of the challenges facing this important industry. I am focused on the future and believe in organizations making sure that their Mission and Vision statements are valid, that the key to keeping on track with the work in any organization is "measurement". That which gets measured gets done and if you can't measure it you better not be doing it.

If elected I will give my time, energy and input openly and honestly, always with the good of the standardbred industry in mind.

James Lehman (Active Director/Ontario)

Now aged 60, I was introduced to harness racing by my Father as a child and have been an active fan ever since. In October 2005, I purchased, along with my wife and a number of friends, my first standardbred pacer - Lucky Secret. We now currently own 5 standardbred horses.

Prior to my retirement I was an owner and president of my own business in South Western Ontario, which provided me with diverse business experience and skills. I have sat on numerous non-profit boards as President and Chairman of various Committees.

I have seen the challenges facing harness racing in the past few years and feel fresh new eyes will provide a different perspective to the Board. With my professional qualifications and the time to devote to the job, I would like to be given the opportunity to represent the members of the Ontario Region on Standardbred Canada Board of Directors. I promise to work hard to improve the industry and enhance its image.

Aaron Waxman (Active Director/Ontario)

I am a 28 year old entrepreneur and Standardbred owner with a lifelong passion and involvement in the harness racing industry. My primary occupation is as president of Waxman Industrial, a service company specializing in the scrap metal and demolition industries. In that capacity I have proven my ability to manage people, operations and to effectively market a start-up.

My combination of entrepreneurial spirit, youth, long term perspective, and love of the sport positions me with the necessary skill set to assist in designing and implementing an action plan to secure the future of our industry. My aspiration is to operate a major breeding operation in Ontario, to that end I am eager to assist in making the short term changes necessary to ensure the long term viability and popularity of our sport.

I will dedicate considerable time, energy, and effort in my role as Standardbred Canada Director to make changes today to position our industry for greatness and growth in the future.

Doug McIntosh (Active Director/Ontario)

Past Director & Vice-President of Standardbred Canada, currently Chair of the SC Stakes Committee. Past Director & Vice-President of Ontario Harness Horseman’s Association. Past member of Windsor Raceway board of Directors.

Owner operator of Doug McIntosh Stables, Two Creeks Farm & McIntosh Pro Line Products, Inc.

Standardbred trainer since 1968 and recognized in North America and Europe as specializing in the training and racing of top trotters.

If elected, I look forward to the dealing with the challenges our industry will face in the future.

Rick Karper (Active Director/Quebec)

My name is Rick Karper and I am running for Director (Active, Quebec) of Standardbred Canada. Trained as an engineer, I spent my career as a businessman in the trucking industry.

My love for harness racing and the people involved goes back 50 years and is the reason for my involvement in industry associations.

I have served as a Director of ATAQ for about 8 years and was the President in 2006. As well, I have been a member of the Audit & Governance Committee of Standardbred Canada for 3 years.

I have lived through the good times and I will do my best to see that our sport and our horsemen, flourish again and that Quebec plays a major role.

--------

Richard Veilleux (Active Director/Quebec Region)

_________________________

Upon the coming election of the future executive committee members of SC, I am calling upon your support once more, for the privilege of representing you within Standardbred Canada. Coming from a family of reputable horsemen, I have been a participant in the industry since my early childhood. I hold a degree of on-the-job apprenticeship which lead me to horse owning and training.

Invited to get more involved in the industry, I have been acting as an administrator on the executive board of the ‘Association Trot & Amble Québec’ (A.T.A.Q.) for 8 years. As a member of the board of directors of SC during the course of the last 3 years, of which 2 on the executive committee, I sat during 2 years, on the committee put forward by SC to revise its members’ long-term disability and life insurance program following horse-related accidents.

I wish I can count on your support for this election in order to assure the continuity in the pursuit of the promotion and development of our industry, for the sake of the participants’ and the general public’s as well.

My next wish being to transmit the family tradition to my two children!

I count on your support and I thank you.

As Director I was the Chair of the Cam Fella and O’Brien awards and a member of the strategic long term planning committee. I wish to be given a second term on the Board of Directors to continue the work I have started.

My career in hockey as a general manager of the Quebec Nordiques as well as a scout for the Montreal Canadiens, New York Rangers and the Philadelphia Flyers have given me the right tools to be an important contributing element to Standardbred Canada

A long awaited wind of change is finally here, we must take this opportunity to increase the prosperity of our industry so that our sport and all of our members can benefit from it.

REGION # 4 - ATLANTIC REGION

Thomas MacPhee (Active Director/Prince Edward Island)

I have been involved in harness racing for over 40 years. Starting in Ontario in the mid-sixties, training and driving there and breeding training and driving when I returned to PEI in 1973.

I am a former Director of the PEI Horsemen's Association. I am still training and racing. If elected I would like to see the horsemen's association get a signed contract with both island tracks so that the horsemen would have some say over our own business.

If elected I would first of all like to hear any and all complaints and try to rectify them.
