Standardbred Canada and the Atlantic Provinces have collaborated for the second consecutive year on the Atlantic Provinces Bursary Program.

The 2008 Bursary program could award up to four students in the Atlantic Provinces bursaries towards their post secondary education this year.

The bursaries will be awarded based on participation in the industry, academics and financial need. Applicants will also be required to submit a typewritten essay addressing 'marketing harness racing to youth.' Applicants must be Canadian citizens and be a child or spouse of an active Standardbred Canada member or an SC member.

A maximum of four bursaries worth up to $1,250 each will be awarded. Applications are available now and must be completed and returned by Friday, August 29.

The successful applicants will be announced on Monday, September 15.

This program is supported and funded by various organizations from the Atlantic Provinces and Standardbred Canada.

Partners from the Atlantic Provinces include the Prince Edward Island Harness Racing Industry Association, the Nova Scotia Harness Racing Industry Association, the New Brunswick Horse Racing Industry Association, the Fredericton Harness Horseman's Association, the Moncton Horseman's Association, Saint John Exhibition Association, Saint John Harness Horsemen's Association, and the 'Horsepersons' Benevolent Fund,' a fund created by the Maritime Provinces Harness Racing Commissions Race Officials.

Presentations to the successful applicants will be made at the racetrack closest to their home.

Last year, Scott Roloson of Belfast, PEI, Whitney Kelly Clark of Charlottetown, PEI, Brendon Dooley of Quispamsis, NB and Chelsey Merrithew, of Douglas, NB each received a $1,000 bursary towards their post secondary education for 2007-2008.
