Martin Scharf, a successful real estate manager and horse owner, will present 2008 Gallo Blue Chip Scholarships to college students Megan Conger and Katrina Shand in the winner’s circle Saturday night at the Meadowlands.

This marks the fourth year that Scharf will award tuition funds in the name of his champion pacer and 2000 Horse of the Year Gallo Blue Chip.

Megan Conger will receive $15,000 to assist with her education at the University of Pittsburgh, where she is enrolled in the School of Arts and Sciences as a freshman. She is currently a Biological Sciences/Anthropology double major with a minor in Chemistry.

She is active in a work-study job at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History in the birds/reptiles/amphibians section. Conger’s scholarship essay expressed her commitment to help eradicate cancer, a disease that has affected her family. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Conger of Jackson, New Jersey.

Katrina Shand will receive $5,000 toward her tuition at Rowan University. She is a senior studying Radio/Television/Film and Geographic Information Systems. Shand is interning in the public relations department at Harrah’s Chester and is anxious to assist in the promotion of harness racing after completing her degree. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ken Shand of Carney’s Point, New Jersey.

Wishing to give back to the industry from which he has gleaned so much pleasure, Scharf has provided scholarships to sons and daughters of horsemen and women in the New York and New Jersey area since 2005.
The Gallo Blue Chip Scholarship is administered through the Harness Horse Youth Foundation. Students who would like further information about the Gallo Blue Chip Scholarship should contact HHYF at 317-867-5877 or by visiting www.hhyf.org.

The deadline for all applications is April 30, 2009.
