12 Days of Christmas - Day 1

Published: December 12, 2008 01:24 pm EST

Inspired by those two hysterical Canadian icons, Bob & Doug McKenzie , we’re counting down the top 12 things our true love gave us this year.

Our true love, of course, is harness racing. Surely we can all rattle off at least a dozen gifts the industry has bestowed upon us in 2008.

(NOTE: I realize the 12-day Christmas countdown doesn’t officially begin until Dec. 14, but I’m starting two days early in the anticipation that there will be little blogging and much eggnogging Dec. 24 – 25.)

So, here goes:

On the first day of Christmas, my true love gave to me . . .

Somebeachsomewhere. At the expense of sounding like a total sap, I proclaim SBSW has been one of the most profound gifts enjoyed by Canadian harness racing in ’08.

We may not individually reap his financial prosperity, but we’ve all benefited indirectly.

He’s granted us favourable media attention and been a catalyst for awakening those stirrings of the heart. That stretch drive of his (sole) defeat in the Meadowlands Pace was the most deliciously excruciating 10 seconds of my 2008.

Any horse that can generate that kind of emotional response is a gift that keeps on giving.

Anymore gift ideas out there, holiday shoppers?
