An Open Letter To Jim Balsillie

Dear Jim,

I hear you're looking to invest some money in a sports industry that's seen better days. And they keep shutting the door on you. That must be frustrating, but your persistence on wanting to spend and invest capital in this day and age is extremely admirable

.

You should know that a group of Canadians here in the harness racing industry, coincidentally, are looking for some seed money to get some fantastic ideas up and running. With your success rate, energy and cutting-edge tech savvy, I would like to give you some information on why we will not turn you away and how even a fraction of what you wanted to spend on a hockey franchise could turn into a very fun and profitable investment.

At the recently-concluded Standardbred Wagering Conference, there was a prevailing consensus of a need for technological advancements, especially with the younger smart-phone toting generation. Someone with your knowledge of this target market would be invaluable to us as we try to increase exposure to this demographic. Other projects on our plate, such as the National Product could also thrive with your connections in international telco markets.

If it's a team you're after, then you can have that too. You can purchase a full stable of horses and watch them compete in one of the world's top racing jurisdictions - right here in Ontario. For that matter, in the Fall you can build you own farm team by purchasing yearlings. Selecting broodmares could help you create your own fantasy team.

Best of all, there will be no need to invest money in a new facility. Two of the tracks closest to Waterloo Region - Mohawk Racetrack and Grand River Raceway (right in your backyard) - are two of the finest racetracks around. That being said, I'm sure that they each have project lists and would entertain offers for any improvements you see fit.

While this list is by no means complete, I would like to discuss these projects with you in more detail at your earliest convenience. Drop me a line or send me a text (on, of course, my Blackberry).
