Stallions in Sweden have been limited to 150 mares per season for many years and in 2009 only three stallions served a full book.
They are the young Angus Hall stallion Flirtin Man, the American expatriate Dream Vacation, and the well-bred Elitlopp winner From Above.
Love You, a French stallion, also served a full book of 150 mares in Sweden using transported semen, of course. Love You, who stands for the highest stud fee (about C$55,000) of any Standardbred in the world, is a 10-year-old.
I’ll list some other stallions that might be familiar to North American trotting fans. The number of mares they bred in 2009 is listed in parentheses:
Going Kronos, the much-hyped Swedish superstar who raced in Canada without success, served 141 mares. His sire Viking Kronos, a son of American Winner known as one of the best sires in Europe, served 68 mares.
Make It Happen, the son of Conway Hall who was third in the 2008 Hambo, served an even 100 mares in his first season.
Here are a few others: Super Photo Kosmos (128), Super Arnie (102), Clerk Magistrate (101), Adams Hall (94), Upfront Larry (88), Enjoy Lavec (78), Lindy Lane (75), Mr Pine Chip (72), Sugar Trader (63), Mythical Lindy (60), Scarlet Knight (58), Fast Photo (56), Quite Easy (55), Celebrity Secret (50), and Spotlite Lobell (50).
Semen from many stallions in North America is imported to Sweden for use in mares. I’ll list a few alphabetically:
Andover Hall (19)
Cantab Hall (19)
Classic Photo (13)
Conway Hall (12)
Credit Winner (24)
Ken Warkentin (53)
Revenue S (27)
It’s ironic that Revenue S would breed 27 mares in Sweden when he served only 28 mares in North America from his current base in New Jersey.
