Fern Hill General Shoots For Seven

A historic P.E.I. Colt Stakes doubleheader will kick off at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday (Sept. 18) at Red Shores Racetrack and Casino at the Charlottetown Driving Park, and undefeated East Coast phenom Fern Hill General will face his fiercest test to date on the afternoon card.

In Race 12, the son of Malicious is saddled with Post 6 in a $12,000 P.E.I. Colt Stakes two-year-old pacing colt Gold division and he puts his six-race win streak to the test for driver Brodie MacPhee, trainer Earl Smith and owners Peter Smith and Gerald Morrissey. Fern Hill General was not eligible to the latest stakes test of the season in Joe O’Brien Memorial action and Stash It Away was victorious that day against the other divisional players in line to Corey MacPherson. That Kevin MacLean-trained pacer will hold down Post 3 on Saturday along with two-time winner St Charles Fireball, who has Post 5 for trainer-driver Marc Campbell and will attempt to knock off the divisional giant.

The other $12,000 two-year-old colt Gold division is in Race 10 with Fern Hill Gusto the morning line choice from Post 2 for trainer-driver Campbell and owner Grayland Farm of Gulf Shore, N.S.

The card also has $5,900 rookie grassroots splits in Races 2, 6 and 9.

JJ Scarlett will attempt to keep her win streak intact from Post 3 in her $13,000 P.E.I. Colt Stakes two-year-old filly Gold division in Race 3. Driven by Danny Gillis for trainer Walter Walker, the daughter of Tobago Cays has landed on the line first in her last five starts. Her chief rivals are slated to be Tobins Diva (Gilles Barrieau) and Mermaid Magic (MacPhee).

Girl In A Tavern gets top call in Gold filly action in Race 7. Jason Hughes trains and drives the daughter of Big Jim for owner Donald MacRae of Vernon Bridge while riding a three-race win streak.

The $6,550 filly grassroots divisions are in Races 5 and 11.

Top Colts Meet On P.E.I. Colt Stakes Night Card

The rivalry resumes for Woodmere Stealdeal and Rotten Ronnie in P.E.I. Colt Stakes action Saturday evening at Red Shores Racetrack and Casino at the Charlottetown Driving Park.

The evening program has 14 races carded with a 6:30 P.M. first race post time. Woodmere Stealdeal controls the rail in his $13,550 P.E.I. Colt Stakes three-year-old pacing colt Gold division, the 12th race on the card, with Marc Campbell driving the Danny Romo trainee for owners Kevin Dorey, Robert Sumarah, Frank Brundle and Glenn MacDonald. The son of Steelhead Hanover boasts 18 wins from 22 lifetime starts and one of those losses was courtesy of Post 2 starter Rotten Ronnie (Redmond Doucet) in a 1:53.3 Cape Breton record score.

Bettim Again returns to the East Coast for a $13,550 P.E.I. Colt Stakes Gold division in Race 9 from Post 2 for driver Campbell, trainer George Rennison and owners Jeff Lilley, Christina Lecky, Blair MacLauchlan and Ian MacDonald. The son of Malicious had been racing the Ontario circuit for trainer Richard Moreau, with his last start a fifth-place finish pacing in 1:50.1 in a $85,250 Somebeachsomewhere stake division at Woodbine Mohawk Park. He will take on Post 4 starter Dustylanegoliath (Gilles Barrieau) for the lion’s share of the purse.

The $6,500 P.E.I. Colt Stakes grassroots colt divisions are in Races 2 and 5.

Tobins Brownie will look to return to the winner’s circle in a $13,000 P.E.I. Colt Stakes three-year-old pacing filly division in Race 7 for trainer-driver David Dowling and owners Alex Quinn, Carl Peterson, Brittany Watts and Amy Lakie. Her chief rivals are sure to be Outrageous Song (Barrieau) and Woodmere Leah (Darren Crowe).

Mystifying rides a two-race win streak into her $13,000 Gold division for sophomore fillies in Race 10 for driver Barrieau, trainer and co-owner Darryl MacLean and co-owners Stephen Downey and Gordon MacLean. Plain Jane (Campbell) is picked for second ahead of Emmy Lou Hayes (Jason Hughes).

Two $6,350 grassroots filly divisions take place in Races 1 and 3.

The Atlantic Aged Pacing Mares series, presented by Standardbred Canada, has a $5,130 division in Race 11 of the night while the $3,400 preferred pace hits the track in Race 13.
