The 85th running of the PEI Colt Stakes will take place this week at Red Shores at Charlottetown Driving Park.
The event is split over three programs, with two- and three-year-old trotters kicking it off on Thursday evening (Sept. 12). A doubleheader on Saturday (Sept.14) will feature two-year-old pacers in the afternoon and three-year-old pacers in the evening.
Between the programs on Saturday, the PEI Colt Stakes will hold a meeting for all Island Standardbred breeders beginning at 4:30 p.m. in the grandstand seating area on the second level. The PEI Harness Racing Industry Association, of which the PEI Colt Stakes is a board member, has taken the initiative of creating a breeders' advisory committee to be managed by the PEI Colt Stakes. The committee will seek input on a regular basis from the breeding industry in their efforts to move the industry forward.
Recent studies have identified several areas where initiatives could be taken including infrastructure, farm extension services, stakes management, youth engagement, breeder incentives, education and training, and public awareness being among the principal challenges.
The proposed breeders committee would consist of all those interested in actively participating in industry development. A chairperson will be elected and serve as the committee representative on the PEIHRIA board. In addition, a secretary will be required to handle meetings and maintain contacts.
All breeders are urged to support this initiative by attending the meeting.
