Fresh off the fastest male rookie mile ever paced on the Eastern seaboard of Canada, Woodmere Stealdeal will put his sights on gold in the Joe O’Brien Memorial stake Sunday afternoon at Red Shores at the Summerside Raceway.

The 12-dash Sunday card has a 1:00 P.M. start time with Woodmere Stealdeal and his undefeated record taking centre stage in the ninth race of the day, the $11,700 O’Brien Memorial Gold division for two-year-old pacing colts.

Woodmere Stealdeal’s 1:55.1 victory in his last start tied filly Saulsbrook Alana’s 2013 Red Shores Summerside win for fastest ever two-year-old victory in Atlantic Canada. Marc Campbell drives the undefeated son of Steelhead Hanover from post five for trainer Danny Romo and owners Kevin Dorey of Middle Sackville and Robert Sumarah of Halifax, N.S.

Other top entries are Dustylanegoliath (Gilles Barrieau) and Woodmere Alvin (Corey MacPherson).

The Backstretch Beat in Sunday’s card is unequivocal about Woodmere Stealdeal’s dominance. “Woodmere Stealdeal had every excuse in the world to be beat in his last start but instead threw down the fastest rookie mile in the history of Atlantic Canadian harness racing. He is without peers.”

The other $11,700 O’Brien Gold division is in the third race with Salwater Savage the morning line choice. Mark Bradley is at the reins for trainer Tom Weatherbie and Island owners Kyle Gardiner, Mike Currie and Jerry MacKinnon, leaving from post four in the compact field of five. The State Treasurer rookie had three straight wins before finishing third against aged company in his last start. The next choices on the morning line are Justcallmedoc (Jason Hughes) and Steel Reefer (Barrieau).

A trio of $6,400 O’Brien grassroots divisions for rookie colts line up in Races 1, 4 and 10.

The card also features the Lady Slipper Stake for two-year-old pacing fillies, and the first $13,000 Gold division sees Southfield Skye (Adam Merner) facing the biggest challenge of her young career. That rival is rail sitter Plain Jane (Marc Campbell) who returns from a brief stint racing in Ontario. Southfield Skye has yet to taste defeat racing in Atlantic stakes competition for trainer Glen MacKay Sr., and owner Southfield Farms Inc., of Summerside.

Tobins Brownie isthe top choice in the other $13,000 Lady Slipper Gold division and she puts a two-race win streak on the line for trainer Jonah Moase and owners Alex Quinn of York, Carl Peterson of Hunter River and Amy Lakie of Montague. The Stonebridge Terror filly will look to add to her $12,488 in seasonal earnings. The Real McCoy (Campbell) controls the rail while Woodmere Stella (Barrieau) is second choice from the outside post six.

The Lady Slipper Grassroots divisions carry $9,000 purses in Races 5 and 8.
