Fabulous Fillies Face Off Friday

Published: July 8, 2021 03:52 pm EDT

Divisional leaders will lock bridles in Friday evening's (July 9) Atlantic Sires Stakes for three-year-old pacing fillies at Red Shores at Summerside Raceway.

The 12-dash presentation has been scheduled for a 6:30 p.m. post time. Red Shores, along with industry officials, continue to track the weather forecast and will make an official announcement Friday morning at 10 a.m.

The evening's featured pace, a $16,700 Atlantic Sires Stakes 'A' division event, lines up as race seven. Tobins Brownie is the morning line choice, and will start from post two with trainer David Dowling driving the daughter of Stonebridge Terror for owners Alex Quinn, Carl Peterson, Amy Lakie and Brittany Watts. The pacer won her first start of the season in Atlantic Sires Stakes action at Truro Raceway in 1:57.3. Aspoonfulofsugar (Walter Cheverie) was the runner-up in that class last week, but gets another crack at her top foe on Friday from post six from the Joe Baxter barn. Mystifying retains the services of Gilles Barrieau from post five with a three-race win streak at risk after also winning an 'A' event last week.

The Backstretch Beat in Friday’s card puts Tobins Brownie as the most probable winner of the evening:

“What a dynamite year Tobins Brownie had in 2020 with nine wins, over $51,000 in earnings, and a record of 1:56.1. She also kicked off her three-year-old campaign with a win and we predict another one tonight.”

The other $16,700 'A" division lines up in race five, featuring Southfield Skye (Jason Hughes) as the top entry fresh off a 1:57.2 win in Truro for owner Southfield Farms Inc. and trainer Glenn MacKay Sr. Other top entries include Elm Grove Penney (Barrieau) and Woodmere Vanish (Paul Langille).

A pair of $3,000 'B' divisions hit the track in races three and nine.

Race 10 is the $3,000 Andy Perry Memorial Invitational Trot with Mile Hill Willie the morning line favourite from post four for trainer and co-owner Paul Morrison and co-owner John Breau. Barrieau returns to drive the Atlantic champion and will have to contend with top mares Hop Up (Corey MacPherson) and Daisy River (Hughes).
