ATSS Trotting Season Begins

The 2021 Atlantic Sires Stakes trotting trail begins Tuesday evening (July 6) as Governor’s Plate Week racing continues at Red Shores at the Summerside Raceway.

The Western Oval will host a 10-dash card getting underway at 6:30 p.m. (ADT) The official draw for the Governor’s Plate presented by Summerside Chrysler Dodge will take place trackside at 7:15 p.m.

The biggest pot of the evening is in Race 6 with a single split of the Atlantic Sires Stakes – P.E.I. Harness Racing Industry Association 2-year-old trot for a $19,620 purse. Moonshine Monday is the morning line favourite from the trailing spot at post 9 in the full field of rookie trotters. Myles Heffernan, Sr. will steer the son of Armbro Barrister–Tymal Maroma for trainer Myles Heffernan, Jr. and owner Jackie Heffernan of Summerville. The full-brother to Atlantic Sires Stakes champion Tequila Tuesday, Moonshine Monday was a 2:09.1 qualifying winner on June 30 at Red Shores Charlottetown.

The Clare MacDonald stable of Antigonish has a pair of entries in the field with the trainer steering Cadillac from post 8 and stablemate Up Helly AA (To be driven by Ken MacDonald) leaving from post 6.

Mr Miller was also a qualifying winner in 2:10.3 and has post 3 on Tuesday for trainer-driver Corey MacPherson.

The Backstretch Beat will side with Mr Miller to start his career off on a winning note. “If Mr Miller can get off the gate clean and go to the front like we think he can, he could score his first big payday tonight.”

The 3-year-old trotters have a pair of divisions for the Atlantic Sires Stakes in Race 3 and Race 5.

The first $10,220 division has Dusty Lane Milo (Jason Hughes) the top choice from post 4 from the Ron Gass barn for owner Marsha Knox of Stanhope.

The second split in Race 5 will see Mr Finlay Ridge (Clare MacDonald) as the favourite from post 4 for Nova Scotia co-owners MacDonald, Arnold Rankin and Ian Tate.

Race 4 is the Clark Smith, Jr. Memorial pace while the Dorothy Smith Memorial lines up in Race 7.
