Gold Cup Champion Returns To CDP

Published: July 30, 2021 02:41 pm EDT

Somewhere Fancy has not seen the Red Shores starting gate in almost two years, but he is back on the East Coast and looking to avenge his 2019 Gold Cup and Saucer defeat in the Saturday evening (July 31) feature at Red Shores Racetrack and Casino at the Charlottetown Driving Park.

Saturday will see a 12-dash presentation getting underway at 6 p.m. ADT, featuring a $3,400 Preferred 1 Pace carded as race 11.

John Mehlenbacher's Somewhere Fancy will headline the Preferred 1, debuting for trainer Chris MacKay after racing for trainer Luis Peña. Marc Campbell will drive the 55-time winner, who last won a race on July 1 at Harrah’s Philadelphia in 1:51.4, from post four. Somewhere Fancy’s biggest win on the East Coast came in the 2018 edition of the Gold Cup and Saucer in 1:50.4. The pacer returned for the 2019 edition of the race and finished second to Rock Diamonds N.

Rose Run Quest has rail control with Gilles Barrieau driving for trainer Jeff Holmes. Screen Test will hold down post two for driver Corey MacPherson, having won his last start in a 1:53.4 romp. Avatar J has post three with Kenny Arsenault in the seat, while Day Delight has post five for driver Brodie MacPhee.

Race analyst Peter MacPhee puts Somewhere Fancy on top of the Post Time Picks.

“We all remember what Somewhere Fancy did here in 2018, winning the Gold Cup and Saucer in 1:50.4 and closed in a snappy 27.3. He’s back on the Island and Campbell hops up, so don’t be shocked when they hit the wire first.”
