Rookies Ready To Rock Summerside

Freshman pacing colts will start their quest for the Atlantic Breeders Crown this Thursday evening (July 12) at Red Shores’ Summerside Raceway, as they will contest the first leg of the Atlantic Sires Stakes, which is part of Governor’s Plate Week racing at the track.

The 11-dash program, which will have a 7 p.m. start time, will feature a pair of $12,680 Atlantic Sires Stakes ‘A’ divisions (Race 7 and 9).

The first split will feature Notorious, who will start from Post 1 for trainer Darryl MacLean, who co-owns the son of Malicious with Gordon MacLean of Winsloe and Shirley Symes of Springhill, N.S. Walter Cheverie has received the catch-driving call on the colt, who is fresh off of a 2:02.4 qualifier. Other top contenders in the dash will be Mrs Browns Boy (to be driven by Clare MacDonald) and Red Dirt Rocknroll (Lenny Myers).

The second ‘A’ division will feature Red Dirt Boomer, who has been favoured early after an impressive 2:01.4 qualifier, which featured a :28.2 closing quarter. Gilles Barrieau trains and drives the son of Malicious for owner Daniel Ross of Belfast. Woodmere Bolt, who is the lone colt to taste pari-mutuel victory in the field, has received 3-1 morning line odds, and he is set to start from Post 2. Fern Hill Dynamic has been assessed as the third early pick and will start from Post 4 with Mark Bradley at the controls.

The program will also feature a pair of $2,500 ‘B’ divisions for the two-year-old pacing colts (Race 3 and 5).

The Henry, Philip and Marlene Doucette Memorial will take to the track for Race 6 and will feature a $1,300 purse. Ultimatelyhandsome, who is the early favourite, will start from Post 6 with Jason Hughes is the bike for trainer Sifroi Melanson and owner Ultimate Stable of Greater Lakeburn, N.B.

Race 8, which is sponsored by Gentleman Jim’s Restaurant in memory of Cam Cameron, will featured the morning-line favoured Southfield Sassy, who will be competing for driver Corey MacPherson and trainer Frank Banks.
