Pompano Park has announced a purse increase and is formulating plans for a fall late closer program when the track reopens for its 50th anniversary season in early October.
The 10 percent purse increase is effective immediately and will continue through closing night, July 27.
Director of Racing John Yinger said, “While our seasonal peak is three months past, we felt it appropriate to show appreciation to our loyal horsemen and women that continue to race here.
“Hopefully, purses will continue to increase further as we celebrate our golden anniversary.”
The new late closer program is being developed by Racing Secretary Greg DeFrank, who plans to have details ready in mid-July with the posting of stall applications for the 2013-2014 season.
“These late closer series will encompass different classes and ensure racing opportunities for all of the entrants,” said DeFrank. "I expect them to draw significant interest from racing interests competing here in Florida.”
Pompano Park kicks off its 50th pari-mutuel anniversary season on Saturday, October 5 with a Wednesday, Saturday, Monday schedule through mid-November, at which time racing will expand to four nights per week with the addition of Sunday racing, which will continue through April before reverting back to a three night schedule.
Yinger said, “Sunday night racing proved to be very popular here in South Florida during our March trials and we expect an even more enthusiastic response this upcoming season.”
