Winbak Farm has reported that retired broodmare Sass Newton passed away on June 11, 2024 at the age of 30.

A 38-time winning daughter of Storm Compensation, Sass Newton, p, 2, 2:03.4h; 3, 2:00.1f; 1:51s ($609,109) was residing at Winbak Farm of Maryland at the time of her passing.

“Sass Newton was a great race mare that also had an excellent broodmare career,” said Joe Thomson, Winbak Farm Owner. “We purchased her in 2011, after she was already a proven producer, and she produced some very nice Winbak Farm-bred performers, including millionaire Newborn Sassy.”

Sass Newton’s offspring have earned $2,571,772. Sass Newton was the dam of 10 winners, including Adioo Volo Stakes winner Newborn Sassy, p, 2, 1:51.1f; 1:50 ($1,104,975), James Lynch Memorial winner Ideal Newton, p, 2, Q2:02.1h; 3, 1:50.2f; 1:49.4f ($629,533), Isaac Newton, p, 3, 1:53.2; 1:51.3f ($367,090), and Smart Rokker, p, 3, 1:54.1h; 1:50.1f ($300,666).

“Sass Newton produced four winners of $100,000,” said Jack Burke, General Manager. “I am glad that her legacy continues with her daughters who have already produced several winners.

Sass Newton’s daughter, Newborn Sassy, is the dam of Sir Issac Newton, p, 2, 1:52.4f; 3, 1:50.3f -'23 ($150,578) and Ideal Newton is the dam of Closing Statement, p, 2, 1:50.4s; 1:49.1f ($545,175) and Inverse Hanover, p, 3, 1:52.2; 1:49.2 ($366,541). “Sass Newton will be missed, but we look forward to continuing her strong pedigree through her daughter, Philly Sass,” said Thomson. “Winbak Farm owns Philly Sass in partnership with Jim and JoAnn King and we hope that she will be as great of a producer as her dam was.”
