When Buffalo Raceway reopens for the live harness racing season in March of 2027, there will be a big change on the track. Starting next season, the passing lane, also known as the 'lightning lane', will be eliminated.
Buffalo Raceway Chief Operating Officer James Mango said of the move, "It is our hope that the racing will be more competitive and less boring. It has all become too routine despite the full fields and good purses."
The Western New York Harness Horsemen's Association President Michael Torcello said of the switch, "Half-mile track racing can sometimes get stale. Whenever Buffalo Raceway management feels they can add excitement to our racing and make the product better, we are happy to cooperate."
For the rest of the season, which concludes on Saturday, July 18, the passing lane remains active.
