On Thursday, June 4, 66-year-old horseman J. Karl Lowes passed away in Syracuse’s University Hospital

.

Lowes, a native of Alma, Ont., was known affectionately for many years as 'the gentle giant' in the Vernon Downs backstretch. The industrious trainer loved working with his harness horses both at the track and at his home in Vernon Center. Lowes enjoyed being around animals of all types, especially his pet cats. He was a member of the Harness Horse Assoc. of Central New York.

In addition to his harness racing pursuits, Lowes was a founding member of the Vernon Center Fire Department. The personable horseman gave his time freely and generously and was always ready to lend a helping hand to his many friends.

He is survived by his wife of more than 36 years, Carol; three sons, Frederick (Rick) Lowes of Vernon Center, Brian and Alicia Lowes of Dayton, Ohio, Eugene Lowes and Sandra Symonds of Middleton, Pennsylvania; a sister, Audrey (David) Borth of Kitchener, Ont.; his mother-in-law, Lucille Minekime of North Collins; two brothers-in-law, two sisters-in-law, as well as several nieces and nephews.

Memorial donations in Lowes’ name may be sent to the Vernon Center Fire Department, 5786 Youngs Road, Vernon Center, New York 13477.

Please join Standardbred Canada in offering condolences to the family and friends of J. Karl Lowes.
