The Ontario Racing Commission (ORC) notes that the Vernon Downs' stable area remains under quarantine as a safety precaution after a case of Equine Herpes Virus-1 (EHV-1) was diagnosed on Saturday. The virus is currently contained to one barn on the Vernon backstretch.
Due to the report of this confirmed case, ORC Manager of Veterinary Services Dr. Adam Chambers advises that Ontario racetracks need to be cautious.
“While it is up to the discretion of the track, I strongly recommend that race secretaries not accept entries from horses that have raced at this track since April 19, 2013. The fact is, the racing industry is very mobile and participants need to use caution and take appropriate biosecurity measures.”
As stated in recent Notices to the Industry concerning EHV-1, the ORC is closely monitoring the situation and any further developments will be reported.
