After having toyed with his rivals last week, Likely To Win will have a target on his back against some freshly qualified foes this Thursday night (May 24) at Red Shores’ Charlottetown Driving Park.
The Melissa Rennie-trained Likely To Win has been pegged as the morning line favourite for the card’s featured contest (Race 9). Adam Merner drives the son of Western Terror for Nova Scotia owners Blenise Young and Lester Campbell, along with co-owner Jeffrey Campbell of Alberta.
Set to start from Post 3 in the $2,000 feature, Likely To Win is fresh off of a 1:56.1 win last Thursday at the CDP, but has some returning faces to go bridle-to-bridle with this week.
Dial The Bossman is set to make the first start of his four-year-old season from Post 2 for driver Jason Hughes and trainer Tom Weatherbie. Machinthesand is set to make just his second start of his nine-year-old campaign from Post 5 with Ken Murphy at the reins.
Other entries include The Big Bite (to be driven by Kenny Arsenault), Keep Coming (Corey MacPherson) and Oh To Be Me (Gary Chappell).
The top distaffers on Canada’s east coast will line up for Race 8, which will be the first $2,350 Fillies and Mares Open Pace of the season. Atlantic Aged Pacing Mares Series champion Brodys Leona will have rail control in the contest with Corey MacPherson at the lines for trainer Kerry Taylor. Malabrigo, who has garnered the support of the morning line classifier, will start from Post 4 for trainer-driver Marc Campbell. West River Ambyr will ship in from Nova Scotia and will start from Post 3 for driver Steven Shepherd and new trainer Harold Shepherd. Shadows Mystery (Gilles Barrieau) will make her first start back on red soil after having raced the Ontario circuit late in 2017.
The action-packed program will also play host to the first trot race of the season (Race 7). Freddie, the undisputed favourite, has been saddled with Post 7 for the $1,600 Open Trot. Campbell trains and drives the son of Majestic Son for owner Three Wisemen Stable of Kingston. Other top entries include Frill Seeker (Kenny Arsenault) and Holy Molie Maggie (Walter Cheverie).
First-race post time for the 10-dash card is 6:30 p.m.
