Officials with Kawartha Downs have announced that the Peterborough-area track will soon be opening for training under strict COVID-19 protocols and regulations.

Kawartha Downs will be open for training, on Wednesdays only, starting Wednesday, May 27. There will be two sets of times, and trainers must contact Jim Huck at 705-927-3122 to reserve their time slot which is on a first-come first-serve basis.

Times slots are 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. and 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The maximum amount of horses allowed in each time slot will be 15. Anyone arriving without a reserved slot will be refused entry, no exceptions. Only one person per horse is allowed in the stall at any one time.

All horsepeople will be screened and temperatures taken at the security gate.

In addition, all horsepeople must supply and wear a face mask. They must be worn upon arrival and may not be taken off at any time while in the backstretch. Kawartha Downs will not supply masks.

Qualifiers will be held on Saturday, May 30 at 12:00 p.m. as well as 4:30 p.m. on race days. All entries must go through Race Secretary Sheri Minler-Grabatin at (905) 854-6442. All qualifier entries must be entered on Thursdays.

For two-year-olds, schoolers will start the beginning of July.
