Sitting at her table Saturday night at the Prince County Horsemen’s Club Awards Banquet at the Summerside Raceway, Stacey Lund knew she was getting at least one award

.

She received the award for the trainer who won the most races at the Summerside Raceway in 2009, as well as the award for leading percentage trainer with over 50 starts. She then sat down, happy with the a second award and the recognition for her best season since she began training in 1997.

Then MC Vance Cameron got to the award for Horsewoman of the Year, and began to describe the career of the award winner.

"That kind of sounds like me," Lund thought to herself.

When Cameron said the Horsewoman of the Year was Stacey Lund, she started to cry.
"This is major," Lund said after the award’s banquet. "It’s the only award I ever wanted to win."

Last year’s highlights for Lund, and her stable of 14, included winning the Breeder’s Crown with War Dancer, and a Cinderella season with previously unraced aged trotter Flashy Image.

"We had great owners and great horses, that makes everything," said the lifetime winner of over 100 races.

It’s not easy trying to succeed in a industry populated by men, Lund said.

"It’s hard to get the respect. Gary Chappell gave me a big shot (in 2007). He let me take over the whole stable for him."

Horse of the Year was dominant free-for-all pacer and Governor’s Plate winner Outlawpositivcharg, owned by Fred Lamont of Calgary, Alta., and trained/driven by Terry Gallant.

Lester Chappell won Horseman of the Year. The trainer and former driver, has had horses at the Summerside Raceway for nearly 60 years.
