Norwood Shahan Passes

Norwood Shahan, a longtime and popular harness horseman that won numerous races, including stakes events, passed away on Monday, February 2 at the age of 75.

Shahan, a resident of Greenwood, Del., owned, trained and drove horses at mid-Atlantic area tracks for a number of years. He bred, raised and races the outstanding pacer Abbes Fancy.

For two seasons, Abbes Fancy, a former season’s champion mare, was Horse of the Year at Dover Downs. In addition to racing at Delaware tracks, Abbes Fancy won races at the Meadowlands Racetrack.

For more than 30 years, Shahan worked as a Trouble Serviceman for DP&L (Delaware Power and Light).

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Evelyn; a son, Randy (Shannon) Shahan; a daughter, Valerie (Edward) Warnick; six grandchildren, and nephews and nieces.

A viewing is scheduled for Saturday, February 7 at 2 p.m. in the Faries Funeral Chapel, 29 S. Main Street, Smyrna, Del. Funeral Services will begin at 3 p.m.
