The Equine Disease Communication Centre (EDCC) has reported that a case of equine strangles has been confirmed in a Standardbred located in Ontario.
Located at a private farm in the District of Cochrane, Ont., a two-year-old filly was examined for a swollen head with enlarged lymph nodes on Feb. 17. She tested positive for S. equi by PCR. A yearling in the same pen as the filly had a purulent nasal discharge. The farm owner, working with their veterinarian, has instituted voluntary animal movement restrictions and biosecurity protocols.
