Red Shores has released the preview stories for its cards of live harness racing at the Charlottetown Driving Park this weekend.

A Win For A Friend

A Charlottetown driver will be trying to win one for an old friend Saturday afternoon at Red Shores’ Charlottetown Driving Park.

First-race post time for the 12-dash card is 1:00 pm.

Michael McGuigan will steer Someone Like You from Post 5 in the Drew Power Memorial (Race 6). Power passed away last December at the age of 31, but was a longtime friend of McGuigan from their time playing on the Charlottetown ‘Junior A’ Abbies. Someone Like You is co-owned and trained by Mitchell Tierney of New Haven for co-owner Bill Andrew of Calgary. The five-year-old daughter of I Am Fool will be challenged to land in the winner’s circle for McGuigan in the $950 event, as Yankee No More (to be driven by Mark Bradley) has Post 3 and Milliondollarfeeln (Gilles Barrieau) will start from Post 7.

The feature (Race 11) sees Pinner favoured early from Post 3 for driver Marc Campbell, co-owner and trainer Brian Ladner of Charlottetown and co-owners Lillian and Kevin Ladner. The Mach Three seven-year-old is riding a two-race win streak, but jumps up in class to compete against Preferred level horses. The two pacers on the Island, Machinthesand (Brodie MacPhee) and Narragansett (Jason Hughes), are shouldered with Post 7 and 8, respectively. Also in the $2,200 race is Blu Meadow Willie (Barrieau), Ultimate Luck (Kenny Arsenault), Doll R General (Mark McKinnon), Painted Desert (Brian MacPhee), and Lucky Encounter (Walter Cheverie).

General Luckypercy favoured early from Post 2 in the back-up pace (Race 7) for driver Ron Matheson, trainer Jackie Matheson, and owners Jodilynn Shepherd of Cambridge, Ont., and Jack Brown of Stratford. The mare has been hitting the board in all her starts, but has been winless since August 24. Her top competitors include Stayoutofmyaffair (Hughes), Bowyer Hanover (Cheverie), and Sterling Seelster (Campbell).

A field of nine trotters is set to face off in Race 3, a $1,100 conditioned event. Majian Chester is the early favourite to win. The trotter will have to overcome Post 8 to land in the winner’s circle for trainer-driver Jim Ripley and owner Marylea Ripley of Amherst. The Nikes Image gelding drops out of the Open Trot and lands in a field that includes Mile Hill Belle (Brian MacPhee), Hopedale Dora (Joey Pineau), Incredible Her Bee (Campbell), Berto Coquette (Corey MacPherson), Honeymoonisover (Brian Andrew), JK Queen (Cheverie), I Aint No Lady (Garth Cole) and Sandhill Angel (Arsenault).

Sunday

Camcun looks to be the one to beat in the $1,750 feature event Sunday afternoon at Red Shores’ Charlottetown Driving Park. The 11-dash card has a 1:00 p.m. first-race post time.

Camcun is co-owned, trained and driven by Arsenault with co-owner Dan Belliveau of Halifax. Capitalism (Gary Chappell) will have some say in the race off the rail, while Mcjestic (Brodie MacPhee) is fresh off a win in 1:57.2 from Post 6. Also in the field is Le Fugueur (Campbell), Honor Roll (Andrew), Libertys Art (Hughes), Tempo Seelster (Vincent Pouton) and McMaverick (Ken Murphy).

Zip The Lip will look to continue his dominance of the Open Trot in this week’s $1,800 edition (Race 4). Brian MacPhee drives the five-year-old son of Ken Warkentin for co-owner and trainer Donald Sweet and co-owner Orville Willis, both of O’Leary. The trotter will have to contend with the outside Post 8, but if he continues to tower over his competition it should not make much of a difference. Other top entries include Abundaspin (Harold Shepherd) and Caliban Hanover (Ron Gass).
