Longtime harness racing industry participant Mike Wandishin passed away after a five-year battle with kidney disease on Dec. 15, 2024 at the age of 64.
Born in Kennett Square, Pa., to parents Edward and Patricia (Ratchford) on June 25, 1960, he is survived by his brothers, Ted and Steve; nieces, Megan and Raechel; and nephew, Nick. He had resided for over at year at West Chester Rehabilitation & Healthcare Center in Chester County, Pa.
A graduate of Kennett High School and the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, he led an “out of box” occupation during his working years. He was the head bookkeeper of Jerry’s Home Improvements before venturing out on a racetrack career that included being a charter, program director, and race secretary at Dover Downs, Thunder Ridge, Northville Downs, Rosecroft Raceway, Harrah’s Philadelphia and Hoosier Park along with a short stint in Louisiana at the Thoroughbred ovals. He made many friends along the way.
When dialysis kept him from working he became a keen handicapper and was very current on all of the harness racing world. His favourite track was Woodbine Mohawk Park.
He played in two fantasy football leagues and was very current on the NFL happenings, especially the Baltimore Ravens.
Mike knew his world history and was a keen trivia player. He loved hearing from his feline buddies, Prince Harry and Lil Roger. They sent photos and videos of their antics daily.
He was a past member of the USTA and a current member of USHWA. The world has lost a kind soul.
