Trot Insider has learned that leading trotting sire Jailhouse Jesse passed on Sunday (Dec. 13) as a result of colic, as reported by his owner and breeder, Al Libfeld. He was 23.
In his racing career, Jailhouse Jesse won 16 times in 76 career starts and banked $262,015. The son of Donerail took his lifetime mark of 1:53.3 as a four-year-old in a time trial at The Red Mile.
His rise to prominence was as a sire, with his progeny collectively having earned over $30.8 million. Among the horses he sired were 88 winners of over $100,000 and a pair of millionaires: champion distaffer Buck I St Pat, who won 51 times and earned over $2.3 million on the track, and seven-year-old gelding Bridge To Jesses, whose sustained success at Harrah's Hoosier Park has earned him 46 wins to date in his career.
From 2009 to 2014 and again from 2016 to 2020, Jailhouse Jesse stood in Indiana, and cemented himself as one of the leading sires in the revitalized Indiana Sires Stakes program.
