Bugsy Maguire Takes On Island’s Best

Published: November 26, 2021 03:09 pm EST

When the chips are down, Bugsy Maguire goes hoof-to-hoof with whoever he faces. He will have more top company in the Sunday afternoon (Nov. 28) featured pace at Red Shores Racetrack and Casino at the Charlottetown Driving Park.

The capital oval has 12 dashes on tap for Sunday afternoon starting at 12:30 p.m., including the $3,400 Preferred Pace in race 11.

Bugsy Maguire is the morning-line favourite in that event with Dale Spence back at the lines for trainer Wade Sorrie and owner Walter Simmons. The Bettors Delight seven-year-old has been superb all season, finishing in the top three in 20 starts in 2021, and will look for the 39th win of his career from post two on Sunday.

The richest Atlantic-bred pacer of all time, The Rev, drew post three in the Preferred Pace with Ken Murphy picking up the drive aboard the Gilles Barrieau trainee. With career earnings of $643,497 lifetime, The Rev was a winner his last start in 1:56.3 with Spence above the wheels. Screen Test is another top contender from post five for the team of driver Corey MacPherson and trainer Ron Gass after finishing second to Time To Dance in last week’s Preferred. Time To Dance is absent from action this week.

Also in the field are rail-sitter Burn Out Hanover (Brady Sweet) and post four starter Mc Pat (Adam Merner).

The Post Time Picks in Sunday’s card have Bugsy Maguire in the win position: “Bugsy Maguire did the unthinkable on Nov. 13, when he rocked off the front and defeated Time To Dance. That top pacer is absent from this field and with post two Spence will be pointing Bugsy Maguire for the lead and taking all comers. It’s repeat time.”

The second race of the day will see Hold Thumbs N make his Island debut for driver Spence and trainer MacKenzie MacInnis of Enmore. The five-year-old Mach Three pacer originated from New Zealand, has been racing on the Ontario circuit, and previously took a lifetime best of 1:53.3 over The Meadowlands in New Jersey.
