Ontario Racing would like to inform broodmare owners that mare enrolment forms and renewal forms for the Ontario Resident Mare Program have been mailed for the 2025 foaling year.
Owners are asked to read the notice enclosed with the forms carefully as some changes have been made to the program and the enrolment form.
To qualify as an Ontario Resident Mare, and have the foal registered as “Ontario Bred,” the mare must be enrolled in the program for each foaling year and meet the program’s eligibility requirements. These requirements include being resident in the Province of Ontario at the time of enrolment and remaining resident in the province for 180 days surrounding the date of foaling.
The annual enrolment fee is $100 per mare before foaling or $300 after foaling but before Sept. 1 of the foaling year. If enrolling after foaling, proof of residency must be submitted at time of enrolment.
If you have a mare in foal for 2025 and do not receive a form in the mail soon, one can be downloaded from the Ontario Racing website, on the "Ontario Resident Mare Program" page, or requested by emailing [email protected] or calling Kathie Wilkinson at 416-576-6298.
Only foals out of mares enrolled in the program are entitled to earn Ontario Bred Rewards, which are payable to the breeder who made the decision to participate by enrolling the mare in the Ontario Resident Mare Program. The program is currently paying approximately $2.6 million in Ontario Bred Rewards to breeders of qualified horses earning purses on Ontario Sires Stakes and selected open races.
