Pictured above in an aerial view is Ohio native Steve Phillips, the man credited with being the "father" of the starting gate. His efforts to introduce a mobile gate, which began as far back as 1930's, finally saw success in 1946 at Roosevelt Raceway. He is shown here with that famous gate that paved the way to the future. He always wore a shirt and tie and never the same ones in the same week, so the story goes.
