There was plenty of sophomore pacing talent was on display at the Glenboro Fair on Saturday as the guys did battle in a pair of $4,111 Golden Boys divisions and the gals went toe-to-toe in a set of $3,621 Silk Lace splits.
In the opening contest for the fillies Magoalie front-stepped her way to a 2:03.1 victory for owner/trainer/driver Dale Lagerquist of Bottineau, ND. She sliced out panels :31.1, 1:03.2 and 1:33.3 before kicking home in :29.3 to seal the deal over runner-up Western Enforcer (Roland Rey) and Finders Keepers (Glenn Le Drew), who was third.
It was the second win of the season for the daughter of Goalie Jeff, who has five lifetime wins to her credit and earnings in excess of $10,000.
Lagerquist also took the other division thanks to an solid off-the-pace score with Tomatoe Juice used off-the-pace tactics to win her assignment in a time of 2:03.3. He conditions the daughter of Armbro President for owner Haley Glintz of Bottineau, ND.
Charms Luck (Darryl Mason) carved out fractions of :30, 1:00 and 1:32 before giving way to the winner in the closing strides. She did, however, managed to hold on for the runner-up award. Third prize went to Finest N Fastest (Roland Rey).
The 2:03.3 clocking was a career best effort for Tomatoe Juice, who is 2-for-16 in her career.
Feisty I Am was the second horse to cross the line in the opening division of the Golden Boys Stake, but the son of Abbatom was later lifted into the top spot for trainer/driver George Isman, who co-owns the gelding with breeder George English of Portage La Prairie, MB.
Oakridge Mac Tray (Philip Giesbrecht) used a strong rally to take the checkered flag, but his number was placed from first to sixth for causing interference to another foe in the late stages of the mile.
Feisty I Am, who was a head back in second, picked up the win and the 2:03.4 race record. Another Cool Move (Roland Rey) was third-placed-second and Iwannagooutside (Dean Rey) was fourth-placed-third.
Feisty I Am has put together a 2-1-0 record in his first four lifetime starts.
There Goes Andy, fresh off a 17-length score in his latest, made a round trip to victory lane in the other split for the boys. The son of Goalie Jeff romped to a five-length decision in a personal best clocking of 2:00.4 for driver Glenn Le Drew.
Robert Ross, who trains the seven-time winner, shares ownership on the winner of $9,594 with Arlene Ross of Virden, MB. The colt easily turned aside second-place finisher Power Of The West (Philip Giesbrecht) and Gates Hero (Dean Ray), who rounded out the top three.
