This afternoon, Trot Insider spoke with Canadian Thoroughbred Horse Society president (Ontario division) Glenn Sikura regarding Tuesday's Selected Session of the Canadian-Bred Yearling Sale.
The sale took place at the sales pavilion located in the backstretch of Woodbine Racetrack. Overall, numbers were down compared to the 2007 edition.
With 149 yearlings sold, Tuesday's sale had a gross of $5,830,500. The 2007 edition had 159 sold and a gross of $6,374,000. A total of 65 horses were 'RNAs' on Tuesday, compared to 59 last year.
The average was down slightly from 2007 -- $39,131 from $40,088 -- but the most notable decline was in the median, which dropped to $27,000 from $32,000 in 2007.
"I was really disappointed that the median was down," Sikura told Trot Insider. "The sale showed a lot of strength at the top, but that strength was not present through the middle. We had a good group of buyers -- one of the better groups that we have seen in a while."
In total, 11 yearlings sold for more than $100,000; eight sold for $125,000 or more, and four sold for $150,000 or more.
Hip No. 51 was the highest selling colt. By Tale Of The Cat and out of the Unbridled mare Remsheg, Hip No. 51 was consigned by Woodlands (Gail Wood) and purchased by Windsong Farms.
Hip No.19 was the highest selling filly. By Saint Liam and out of Noble Strike, Hip No. 19 was consigned by Hill 'N' Dale Sales Agency and bought by Arosa Farms.

The Canadian-Bred Yearling Sales' Preferred Session is scheduled for Saturday, September 6 at the sales pavilion and will get underway at 3:00 p.m.
